Elements and Performance Criteria

  1. Plan and prepare to set up and pack up drill sites
  2. Assist driller to set up drill rig
  3. Prepare and dismantle ancillary equipment

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

set up and pack up drill sites on at least two occasions, including:

erecting and observing warning signs and barriers

setting up and dismantling at least three ancillary equipment from the following:

compressor

pumps

grout pump

mixing tanks

sample collection hopper/skip

support vehicle

water tank, temporary reservoirs and pipelines

high frequency (HF) radio aerial, microwave dish

cyclones

sample storage

down hole test or installation equipment (packers, survey, water pressure test equipment, sampling devises)

core boxes

drill string components tools

connecting services to and from equipment.

During the above, the candidate must:

locate and apply documentation required for setting up and packing up drill sites

implement the requirements, procedures and techniques for completing the setting up and packing up of drill sites, including:

identifying, managing and reporting all potential hazards

testing working order of equipment

applying manual and mechanical handling techniques

communicating using hand signals for vehicle positioning and mast raising

decontaminating rig and equipment if required

maintaining equipment

cleaning, digging and protecting mud pits and drains as required for drilling method

work with others to set up and pack up drill sites that meet required outcomes, including:

complying with reporting requirements and procedures

communicating with others to receive and clarify work instructions

communicating with others to meet coordination requirements throughout work activities.


Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

key policies, procedures and established requirements for setting up and packing up drill sites, including those for:

work health and safety

emergencies

relevant environmental practices, including those for:

reducing contamination and pollution

containing, dispersing and disposing of waste fluids

equipment operation and maintenance

unloading equipment

storing and handling hazardous substances

alignment requirements for setting up drill

basic geology

hazards relevant to setting up and packing up drill sites

drilling team roles and objectives.
